FLY AWAY HESTER AND DIMMESDALE, FLY!!

  1. Symbolism: Beginning of Chapter 21-There is another town gathering which directly reflects that in the beginning of the book. A new story is about to unfold, I believe for Hester, Pearl, and Dimmesdale. SYMBOL OF A NEW BEGINNING!!!!
  2. Symbolism: Chapter 18-Hester is enlightened by the idea of moving to Europe, and reveales her true beuty by letting her hair down.

Journal #6

I have grown anxious and weary over these past few days. I know more than ever that Dimmesdale is Pearl’s father. I am distraught and disgusted by the thought of Hester and Dimmesdale being together. They must be meeting with each other, discussing some secret plan. I have not a clue yet what they intend to do, or where they intend to go. I have been planning my revenge on the trio for some hours now, though I hope to harm neither Hester nor Pearl as much as I am going to harm Dimmesdale. He had not showed up at his house, he was out with Hester as I suspect.

Dimmesdale returned this afternoon. I wanted to ask him so badly if he knew my true identity, but I hesitated. I was indeed afraid. It wasn’t the time to get into any argument, what if he didn’t know my identity? Dimmesdale told me that he no longer require my assistance or medical help. At that point, it had become rather clear to me that Hester and Dimmesdale were planning something; I suspect they are going to leave the town.

Chillingworth Turns to the Dark Side

Journal #5

I knew it was coming. I knew Hester wanted to tell me to stop tormenting Dimmesdale. I could always sense a strong connection between Hester and Dimmesdale. Though, it wasn’t until now that my suspicions were clarified. I was gathering some herbs for my medical cabinet. Then, Hester confronted me. I hoped to set her off by complementing on her achievements. I even told her of the rumor that her scarlet “A” may be removed. She neglected my friendliness, and demanded I stopped torturing Dimmesdale. Hester told me it was about time I confessed to the minister my true identity. At this moment, I was sure that Dimmesdale was Hester’s lover.

I came to realize how I had been twisted over that last few years, how my mentality had drifted towards evil. I recalled what used to be, a noble scholar. Now, I am but a fiend of evil. This is all because of Hester; it is her fault I have turned this way!

Journal #4

Mr. Dimmesdale is still under my watch. He isn’t getting any better as long as I continue to care for him. I continue to toy with his mind. I want Dimmesdale to suffer. I feel the urge too; I must know what he knows. Dimmesdale is the luminary to Hester. With his knowledge, I can exert my revenge. I am getting to the zenith of my tempers, though, for he hasn’t revealed anything to me yet. His pulpit remains shut. However, I believe I am making progress. His sermons continue to be more and more powerful on the subject of sin. Soon, I hope he will reveal his sins to me.

I know Mr. Dimmesdale resents me, but he is still subject to my will. I see how it is tearing him apart, how he blames himself for his suffrages. I found Dimmesdale recently upon a scaffold. A convinced him that it was his sleepwalking that lead him to be in such a position. I suspect that he had been conversing with Hester, which make me rather suspicious of the relationship between the two. Though, that next day, I saw Dimmesdale give his most powerful sermon yet. I suspect that he will break soon. The guilt of his sins will let loose.

Chillin Journal #2

Life is fine for me as of now. I have stayed put in Salem. I hadn’t much to worry about while Hester was still in jail. Though, I hoped she would persevere.

I am happy to see that over the past few years Hester has carried on with life. Although she is an outcast, she manages to stay afloat due to her skilled stitching. I realize the same she is burdened with. Though, even the governor wears her artistry. If it wasn’t for this unique skill of hers she would surely be in turmoil.

I have heard this rumor of Pearl being some spawn of the devil. I don’t see these people’s reason, but if she is indeed a devil child, than she would be taken away for Hester’s sake. I hope however, even more for Hester’s sake, if the child is innocent, that they would remain together. I know Hester is a great mother, and will be able to support her.

Chillin Journal#1

I have returned to America, my heart filled with revenge. I cannot say much for Hester, she has her issues. My purpose is not to cause a fuss; I would like to keep my identity unknown. There is work that needs to be done; I must know whom my wife had an affair with. I will hopefully be able to say more about this subject later.

They attire I was wearing upon my arrival was only to disguise myself. I was heavily dressed in Native and European clothing. The colonies, as I could see, have sure changed in the past few years. It seems that the appeal of the New World has grown. Though, this is of no importance to me. At that time I had to find Hester.

It was not a hard task to pick her from the crowd; she was still the same dreary person I had left years ago.

  4. Pg 54: Besmirches: To bring down in respect or regard.
